Well, I guess it’s about time I threw my hat into the webcomic pile. Right now it’s going to be centered around the game Blood Bowl, but I plan on expanding it to include other topics as well. “Stomp the Press!” stars Jack Rags, ace undead reporter. As always, critiques are welcome, especially since I’m still getting a hang of this whole drawing thing.
Everything’s coming up Machinima
I’m very happy to break the dry spell and finally wrap up a Machinima I’ve been working on for the past couple months. Enjoy!
A Return to Videos
After months of starting various projects, I’ve finally managed to find something I’m really excited to work on consistently turning into videos. Seven other people and I have teamed up to form the Video Games AWESOME TURBO Blood Bowl League (a mouthful, I know).
I’ll be uploading my matches onto youtube with commentary, making tips and tricks videos, as well as some other non-Blood Bowl projects as well. Blood Bowl’s been one of those unexpected-love experiences, and I’m looking forward to some really fun matches!
This first video will help explain some of the basics of team building, and will be followed by analysis of the teams in the league, as well as the basics of actually playing.
New Year’s Update
1… 2… 3… Kick it! Drop that Beat like an Ugly Baby
I remember the first time I saw one of those simple audio visualizers. You could change between different amorphous blobs of color or the classic DJ bars, and see what music looked like. As exciting as the prospect was, I usually got bored of the same repetitive motion over and over again.
Enter 1… 2… 3… Kick it! Drop that Beat like an Ugly Baby. Besides having an intriguing (albeit possibly offensive) title and theme song to go along with it, the game takes music visualization a step further by making it interactive. By the makers of AaaaaA!, the game has a similar playing style, but instead creates the level based on the user’s music.
The game is still in alpha phase, and as such still has some improvements to make. My biggest problem with it, is that, despite the feeling of immersion with the music, I didn’t really feel like I was playing a game. It gave me a laser to shoot things with, but I rarely saw things I could shoot. I resorted to avoiding blocks and aiming for rings for points, but then it felt more like a trip through Willy Wonka’s boat tunnel than a game. Which is enjoyable in and of itself, but I could enjoy it more if it were a subset of the package as a whole. Perhaps a zen/non-competitive mode where you just enjoy the music, and the rest of the “game” is a mode where it gave me a better sense of how I did. Other music-based games like Rock Band play based on the music, and give you a sense of how you did.
Where I think 1… 2… 3… Kick it! succeeds is in the freedom that it gives music games. You can choose any song from your music library to use in your game, and it seems to handle different styles pretty well. One of the level modes even lets you tweak the shape, size, and hue of the obstacles (even though when i cranked all the options up to ten I ended up falling through a solid passageway of blocks). It is the focus on letting the player interact with the music how he or she wants that i think offers a lot of potential, and i look forward to the finished project.

Minecraft Sprites
I’ve added a gallery of some of the sprites I’ve made in Minecraft (survival). I’ve heard people put down this activity because it is essentially copying. For me, however, “spriting” is very relaxing and rewarding, and the part of Minecraft I look forward to most when I need a break from the real world.

Costume Quest Minecraft — Pumpkin
The Pumpkin’s probably pretty rotten a week after Halloween…
The Pumpkin is actually the statue I designed first back in September. I hadn’t undertaken this kind of building in Minecraft before, so I chose the character with the most straightforward body. The head, however, has given me grief since day one, whether it was the wrong scale or the wrong shape. Since it’s not spherical, I ended up using Qubicle Constructor to make a guide for an ellipsoid. It’s not perfect, but I’m satisfied with this end result.
